A New Case. Chapter 1

A New Case.  Chapter 1

(Chapter 2 can be read HERE)

It was a cold winters morning in February, and the flames of the freshly lit fire struggled against the cold that had permeated the Palaces drawing room. Erin stared into the flames, absorbed by their dancing form, and wondered if this wasn’t so very different to the days she spent on the streets. Days when, having been out in search of food, fending off starvation, she had found refuge under a warm car engine or nestled in a steaming compost heap.

Times moved on and changed for sure, as did circumstance, but some things really never changed, such as worry and caring, and food and warmth and.....

The palace bell chimed out the arrival of a visitor. Erin snapped out of her reverie and looked out the window to see who it might be, and saw a bicycle propped up against the drawbridge. It was, she thought, similar to those used by the home delivery team of the village FWI (Feline Women’s Institute) to deliver cakes and knitted items. The wicker basket at the front doubled as a means to transport ones kittens to and from the Kitten Creche in the village hall.

But the FWI weren't due to drop off the cake samples till Thursday. And this was certainly not the postman’s bike, as the delivery was, due to a shortage of applicants, only every other week on a Tuesday. Today was Monday. Erin returned to the fireside and cleaned a paw, and then sat herself ready for news of the caller from Mrs Hudson, and her breakfast tray.

Downstairs, the guest had been received into the hall. After taking some notes, Mrs Hudson offered them a seat on the new heated cat pad that Erin had won in Dezi and Raena Belles competition. Pleased to find warmth, and after circling and kneading the wool blanket on top, the guest settled down to wait.

There was a knock on the door and Mrs Hudson entered and handed Erin the visitors calling card. “Erin, dear, you have a guest. Shall I show them in?"

"Did they say what they wanted me for? If it's about the donations for Injured Postman Society, I have some cheese triangles in the pantry that we won at the village fete." Erin paused and then scratched her ear. "No, best not offer them those as they might not be able to get the wrapping off if they have injured fingers from dog bites. Best give them the Edam. That has a great waterproof wax coating and would be fine for outdoor delivery folk."

"A great choice, Erin, though I don't think they're from the postal service. For one thing, the Kraken let them pass and we know how she hates postmen ever since THAT incident as a baby. No, I think this may well be a case!"

"A case of what, Mrs H? Sorry, are you saying that they're from the nip wine merchants with a bill!" Erin frowned and wondered if she really oughtn't to encourage these folk by buying from them. She had paid the bill, mouse on receipt, the previous week and would be most put out if she had to explain herself again, or find the receipted tails, as proof.

"No dear, a proper case, of the international sort." She gave a pronounced wink and then sighed. "Have you forgotten, dear, the International Detection and Investigation Bureau we started a few weeks ago?"

"Ah yes, I was just testing Mrs H, or should that be Agent H? Just making sure we're on the ball as it were. Please send our visitor up, and then bring us some nip tea. Do you think I should light up a nip cigar, or a pipe, to add gravitas?"

"No dear, absolutely not, what will people think! No, smoking is a terrible and dangerous habit, and filthy too, especially for a lady. Now if you want to look fashionable then maybe sit on your new glossy magazine, or offer our guest one of those nice nip bananas or kick sticks." Mrs Hudson pointed to a shallow basket on the side table. It had, she noted, been freshly filled with kick sticks, premium ripe nip bananas, and smaller nip mice. She made a mental note to take one of the nip mice on the way out the room, just in case she needed a light relief later in the day.

"Yes, you are right, Mrs H. Please show our guest up, if you will." Erin turned and arranged a fresh copy of the glossy 'Through the Mouse Hole' magazine on her guest's chair. She then placed a copy of 'The Princess Periodical' on her own, title facing forwards, as polite society and status directed.

The door opened, and Mrs Hudson admitted the cloaked and hooded guest, and then closed the door, leaving the two cats standing in silence, both looking into the flames in the hearth.

I hope you enjoyed this taste of my new case. To find out who this mysterious visitor is, please join me next week when more will be revealed!

  19. Erin, your selfie is downright adorable! I hope you got a few treats or mice or something in compensation! Inquiring minds want to know why you'd give cheese triangles away?! Isn't that your bread and butter? Err ... cheese and mouse?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ahh, the giving of cheese, it's all an etiquette thing. Plus, whilst I have Mrs H to do such tasks as preparing meals, sometimes I like to break into a fresh piece of cheese, and watch it crumble under my claw, then pick up a chunk and let it melt in my mouth..... You just don't get the same effect with tin foil wrapped soft cheese, way too messy and definitely NOT what you have on the cheese board at social events.

PS Those cheese triangle are a very good Ninja weapon, should you and EM wish something other than spoons and forks!
